REFERENCE MATERIAL — THE “GOVERNMENT THEOREM” QUOTE

Here's the exact Obama “the government theorem” quote, from White House transcript, July 13, 2012:

If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help.  There was a great teacher somewhere in your life.  Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive.  Somebody invested in roads and bridges.  If you’ve got a business -- you didn’t build that.  Somebody else made that happen.  The Internet didn’t get invented on its own.  Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet.

“Medical History for all children throughout development
Ages: 0 to 11 months, 1 to 4 years, 5 to 10 years, 11 to 14 years, 15 to 17 years.”

“Tobacco Use screening for all adults and cessation interventions for tobacco users”

The above are from the document “Preventive Services Covered Under The Affordable Care Act | HealthCare.gov”, posted September 30, 2010, last updated July 31, 2012.  The document was originally retrieved from  http://www.healthcare.gov/news/factsheets/2010/07/preventive-services-list.html#CoveredPreventiveServicesforWomenIncludingPregnantWomen but seems to have been removed.

Archived: "Preventive Services Covered Under the Affordable Care Act | HealthCare.gov.pdf".

This is another document to have: https://www.cms.gov/Outreach-and-Education/Medicare-Learning-Network-MLN/MLNMattersArticles/downloads/SE0752.pdf.

Note.  Rather than to make binders and binders of medical history and behavioral assessments of your baby, there are ways to simply do things, to get stuff done.  Occasional records, sure, but this systematic deployment of a grim model is the social democracy way, and is an abject failure.

REFERENCE — A PARAGRAPH FROM PLATO’S THE REPUBLIC

The following excerpt is from The Republic by Plato, p. 145 (Book V)

    — translated by Richard W. Sterling and William C. Scott, 1985.

    But that would be absurd.

Yes, absurd.  And for no other reason than our failure to stipulate in the beginning that we are not concerned with every conceivable difference or similarity that exists between one nature and another but only with those relevant to a person’s work.  We can clarify our meaning by observing, for example, that a man and a woman who both have the qualifications to be a physician have the same nature.  Do you agree?

    Yes.

But two men, one a physician and one a carpenter, have different natures?

    Oh, entirely different.

So, then, those men and women who display distinct aptitudes for any given kind of work will be assigned to do that work.  If a critic can do no more than bring up the one distinction between man and woman—that the one begets and the other bears children—we shall say that for our purposes he has offered no proof of difference at all.  We shall continue to affirm that our guardians and their wives should perform the same tasks.

And we shall be right in doing so.

As our next step, then, we should invite our critic to tell us precisely where a woman’s nature differs from a man’s when it comes to conducting the affairs of state.

    Fair enough.

Perhaps he will respond the way you did a little while ago and say that it is hard to find an appropriate answer right off, but that after a little reflection it becomes less difficult.

    He might.
