In 1990, Tim Berniers-Lee invented the Web on a NeXTcube.
Kevin A. Sensenig | September 23, 2012
The exact quote, from the White House transcript, July 13, 2012:
If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business -- you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen. The Internet didn’t get invented on its own. Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet.

Actually, I think that the Internet was invented (by DARPA — the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency) in the 1980s. It just didn’t exist for most people. It hadn’t been deployed yet, and most of the 1990s was Internet at modem speed. Sufficient for email, routine documents, and text-based Web sites (some graphics).
It is my understanding that AT&T had been denied access to the marketing of computers by the US DOJ in the 1950s.
It is my understanding that AT&T had been broken up by the US DOJ in the 1980s.
It is my understanding that UNIX System V originated as an AT&T Bell Labs project in 1970.
It is my understanding that /Internet/ is /computer/ integrated with /communications/.
It is my understanding the IBM was nearly broken up by the US DOJ in the 1980s.
It is my understanding that NeXT was a startup in the 1980s, funded by Steve Jobs’ own money, and later from private investor(s).
In 1990, Tim Berniers-Lee invented the Web on a NeXTcube.
In 1991 the Web was first deployed as a service and platform.
The NeXTstation was built, designed, and engineered for small town and regional America. As well as the corporate and business environment. As well as the graphic artist and serious professional.
NeXT got some trade press coverage. Today we have cable and the Web.
There’s direct mail. There’s UNIX text files and UNIX grep. There’s Objective-C and custom apps. To read text files, filter and sort. >> Maybe room for a 1990 Mission Critical Custom Application. (That turned into a 1994-95 slogan by NeXT.)
