Mental View And Orientation — MVO — Set 1 (Initial Papers)

Kevin A. Sensenig | September 25, 2014 | Updated October 10, 2014

Introduction

MVO is a set of papers meant to provide material resource for the individual in the mental health field, or for everyday life.

Those with the everyday, with schiz-like mind, or other mental states wherein the individual may consider various means to mental view and orientation, within a vocabulary framework.  Feel free to review the papers here, PDFs included in a zip file.  You can likely study these yourself, or with others, or in a group setting; or with a reasonable professional.  They are meant to be considered with value at first glance, then to require further reflection, contemplation, study, and meditation (or other means you find useful), and effort.  The material is meant to provide vocabulary and orientation.  You are not locked into this; it is a resource.  If you’re in the mental health field, you may want to consider this material alongside narrative.  In everyday life, we routinely encounter narrative, and in either case, this is important.

That is, to be clear, mvo can be ‘mvo’, ‘mvo-meds’, or ‘mvo-yoga’.

I rely on Buddhist thought, particularly Nagarjuna; material from The Society Of Mind by Marvin Minsky; and my own insights.

I feel that to have material resource for the individual is important.  This becomes more clear to me as I work even more deeply with Zen Buddhism, and have stepped into philosophy, and have unfolded a more intuitive awareness and effort.

I want to state again that mvo may appeal to everyday insight and/or dilemma.  I don’t introduce the four reliable facts by Nagarjuna in the papers, but they are as follows, and the material should be consistent with these:

  1. -reason (and I read this as philosophical reason, logical reason, reason reason, artistic reason, musical reason, historical reason, and so forth)

  2. -the external world

  3. -the present moment

  4. -reality (this world)

Nagarjuna introduces these in the book Fundamental Wisdom Of The Middle Way, and I use the translation by Nishijima.

Another resource I cite and work with is Marvin Minsky’s book The Society Of Mind, a dynamite book that tries to answer the question how minds might work, and whether or not you have your own ideas on this, does provide significant vocabulary, and sets a standard of wisdom, insight, thought, dynamic, and discipline.

I introduce other material by Nagarjuna, and the material from Marvin Minsky, along with material that I source myself.  There are other resources, such as in the recovery movement (including narrative, by people who’ve gone through dilemma), and the work of Marsha Linehan (which I haven’t studied yet but seems to be well-structured and detailed, specific).  In some cases individual contact is very important; in others, there may be room for reflection, contemplation, study, and meditation — oneself; and of course, both together; also, group settings (with the right framework).

In the papers I have here, start with the Title Page and the Introduction, then the papers in the order listed in the Introduction, including Addendum 1 and Addendum 2.  They are in a specific order, but you do not need to follow this order, and can even start with the addenda.  For the individual in the mental health field, I recommend the order given, then to re-read and study the material again, over time, and to work with it.

The Zip File With PDFs

The zip file contains several PDFs.  Unzip the file and find Title Page and Introduction, then consider the other PDFs.

MVO - Set 1 - v1.02 - PDFs.zip

To unzip the file on OS X, double-click on the zip file in the Finder, or select the zip file in Finder and select the menu item

    File->Open.

Windows will be similar, although I’m not sure if you’ll have needed to install WinZip or some such app, or if it’s built in.

Notes

I plan on a second set with papers that are more specific to the mental health field, particularly schiz-like mind, perception, working with stepped awareness, and so forth.

Note: if you use this as a professional in say a group or individual setting, please let me know.  Thanks.

Note: this material will not be useful to everyone, and some in the mental health field will want to simply rely on meds.  No problem.  For those in the mental health field for whom otherwise the material is not useful, there may be other resources you can look to.  Some in the mental health field may find the material useful.  Others in the everyday likely have many options available to them; but this mvo material may provide a distinct quality that appeals.  In any case, feel free to comment.
