Apple-Samsung

De Facto Standard

Kevin A. Sensenig | September 23, 2012

I’m not sure why Apple doesn’t realize that it has invented a de facto standard for smartphone graphical user interface, and let it float in the industry, a joy for the entire planet, retaining its own place in an ecosystem of product and design, and in history.

But the graphical user interface is material.  Where style or visual arrangement is intellectual property.  There is depth to this.

Samsung probably can incorporate design aspects of the rest of their interface to their icons, and the initial display, to set it apart.

It seems that Xerox PARC, in the 1970s, had the following:

Graphical user interface.

The mouse.

Networking.

Object-oriented programming.

A document-centered approach.

I should know more about Xerox PARC and the computer ideas it was working with.
